CHANGING POSITIONS
The resignation process is often misunderstood. The exit interview is
the time to be pleasant, professional and considerate. It is not
the time to vent your anger and discredit your boss. In a community like
Cleveland, the chance of you crossing paths with your previous supervisor again,
or at least needing a reference from your employer, are very good. You
have made the decision to leave; now make this exit as positive as you possibly
can.
Always submit your resignation in writing to your supervisor before you tell
anyone else about the fact that you are leaving. If you fail to conduct
the process in this fashion, you will create a very embarrassing situation for
your boss. Can you imagine how your supervisor would react to hearing
about your resignation from someone other than you? Refrain from sharing
your good news with your friends and associates until you have notified the
proper people.
Below is an example of a letter of resignation:

Today's Date
Dear _________________,
This is to advise you that I am resigning my position as
__________________ (title), with ___________________ (company). Please
accept two weeks notice now with my last day being __________________ (day of
the week), _____________________ (date).
My tenure with _________________________ (company) has been a
fine and rewarding association. The personal relationships will be
especially valued for the rest of my career. However, the new challenge is
unique in character and timing.
This is a firm decision that has been weighed most carefully.
A commitment has been given to honor a ____________________ (start date) start
date, and it is important that I do so. I am sure you will understand and
accept this in the positive light as offered.
I will do everything I am able to, between now and
______________ (end date), to make this transition as smooth as possible for you
and ____________________(company name).
Thank you again for your many contributions towards the
development of my career during my time with __________________ (company name).
Sincerely,
(space for signature)
Your full name
As previously mentioned, it is highly likely that you may cross
paths with your previous employer sometime in your career future. Let me
site this example. We placed the Plant Manager of a large Tier I
Automotive Stamper with another Tier I Automotive Stamper. He chose to
take the opportunity at his exit interview to identify everything he disliked
about his experience and in particular, what he thought was wrong with his
supervisor, the V.P. of Manufacturing. He shared these thoughts with
everyone whom would listen, including the V.P.'s boss, the President. He
also gave the company a four day notice and left them in a tough position.
Four months after he began his new position the V.P. of
Manufacturing at his new place of employment unexpectedly died. His firm
contacted us for a replacement. Guess who we placed there as V.P. of
Manufacturing? The Plant Manager was terminated from his new position
ninety days later.
Do not burn bridges. It does you no good at all except to
give you ten minutes of satisfaction.
